BRATTLEBORO -- Seven senior nuclear reactor operators at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant filed a lawsuit against the state of Vermont Wednesday, just hours before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission held its annual assessment of the plant.

According to an anonymous source, operators Vincent Ferrizzi, Michael Harris, Neal Jennison, Derek Jones, Thomas Roberts, John Twarog and Albert Zander claimed that a closure of the nuclear plant infringes on their civil liberties because their operating licenses are specific to Vermont Yankee. To operate another facility, they would have to go through rigorous training, especially if the plant was not similar to the nuclear plant in Vernon. They claim that the state should not be able to close the plant since the NRC has already issued the plant an extension on its operating license.

None of the operators could be reached for comment.
